Titanium Dioxide Sunblock-Is Titanium Dioxide Banned In The Uk
As of my last update in early 2023, Titanium Dioxide (TiO2), which is commonly used as a white pigment in paints, plastics, papers, and in sunscreen as a UV filter, has not been banned in the UK. However, there has been discussion and regulatory action regarding its use in certain products, particularly in cosmetics.
The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has classified Titanium Dioxide as a substance of very high concern (SVHC) due to its potential to cause cancer when inhaled as a powder. This classification led to restrictions on its use in certain products. For instance, in February 2020, the EU banned the use of Titanium Dioxide as a nanoparticle in sunscreen and other cosmetic products that are intended to be sprayed or inhalable.
In the UK, after Brexit, the regulatory environment can differ from that of the EU, but the UK often aligns with EU regulations. Therefore, while Titanium Dioxide is not banned outright in the UK, there may be restrictions on its use, especially in products that could lead to inhalation exposure.
It’s important to note that regulations can change, and for the most current information, you would need to check the latest guidance from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in the UK or the relevant regulatory body responsible for chemical safety.
