Titanium Dioxide Sunblock-Is Titanium Dioxide Banned In Canada

Is Titanium Dioxide Banned In Canada

As of my last update in early 2023, Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) was not banned in Canada for general use. However, there has been regulatory activity concerning its use, particularly in certain products.

In March 2020, Health Canada proposed to classify Titanium Dioxide as a substance that is “toxic to human health” under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 (CEPA). This classification was based on concerns over its potential carcinogenicity when inhaled as a fine particle. The proposal was open for public comment and was part of a process that could lead to regulatory action.

It’s important to note that the classification as a toxic substance under CEPA does not automatically result in a ban. Instead, it may lead to further risk management measures, which could include restrictions on the use of Titanium Dioxide in specific applications, such as in consumer products or industrial processes.

Titanium Dioxide is widely used in many products, including paints, plastics, paper, and cosmetics. If there have been any new developments or changes in regulations regarding Titanium Dioxide in Canada after my last update, you would need to check the latest information from Health Canada or other relevant regulatory bodies for the most current status.
